Leadership Development in the Roma Community

The leadership vacuum within the Albanian Roma community has long been a major barrier to sustainable change. Limited access to political, social, and economic institutions has contributed to the isolation of Roma communities, reinforcing feelings of exclusion and limiting collective action.

Roma Versitas Albania responded to this gap by identifying and supporting young people with leadership potential. The selection process was highly competitive, and ten candidates were admitted to the Barvalipe programme, with five completing it successfully.

The Barvalipe School focused on three core objectives:

  1. Building a sense of collective purpose and shared power.
  2. Strengthening leadership confidence and practical leadership skills.
  3. Creating a supportive peer network for sustained leadership development.

Participants were exposed to intensive training and development opportunities. They studied Roma history to strengthen identity and pride, learned about collective action through institutions and civil society, and developed practical communication skills through media engagement, debates, and public speaking exercises.

Graduates of the programme gained both technical understanding of institutional systems in Albania and personal confidence in their identity as Roma leaders. Equally important, they formed a peer network that continues to support their leadership journey.
